Agile Coaching Agreement

Report

The Agile Coaching Agreement is a structured tool that helps Agile Coaches, teams, and stakeholders align on the goals, focus areas, and expected outcomes of a coaching engagement.

When to use the Agile Coaching Agreement?

As a coach, Scrum Master, or facilitator, you often need to set expectations and clarify the purpose of your coaching work. Use this template at the start of an engagement to:

  • Align teams and stakeholders on objectives and success measures.

  • Clearly outline focus areas and commitments to guide coaching efforts.

  • Define how success will be evaluated and what support the team needs.

It works particularly well when:

  • Kicking off a new coaching engagement with a team or individual.

  • Supporting teams that are adopting or improving Agile practices.

  • Helping stakeholders understand the role and outcomes of Agile coaching.

How does the Agile Coaching Agreement work?

When doing your coaching contract discussion, the agreement will guide the conversation through key sections that ensure alignment and focus:

  1. Background: What is the current situation or challenge for the team? (5 mins)

  2. Objective: What is the purpose of the coaching engagement? (5-10 mins)

  3. Logistics: What are the practical details (e.g., time, effort, locations)? (2 mins)

  4. Engagement: What type of support is required—assess, advise, or assist? (5 mins)

  5. Key Focus Areas: What specific areas will the coaching address? (10-15 mins)

  6. Success Measures: How will progress and success be evaluated? (5-10 mins)

  7. Commitment: What is needed from the team to make the coaching successful? (5 mins)
